What is Manual Transmission and how you choose?
Most probably every car lover knows that a manual transmission is a type of transmission used in motor vehicle applications. It uses a driver-operated clutch engaged and disengaged by a foot pedal (automobile) or hand lever (motorcycle), for regulating torque transfer from the engine to the transmission; and a gear selector operated by hand (automobile) or by foot (motorcycle), but few people know what to choose between manual transmission and automatic transmission.
Many of you may have thought before buying a car what would be suitable for you. It’s not an easy question to answer. This is why we prepared a list of advantages and disadvantages of manual and automatic car transmissions hoping it will help you make a better choice.
Manual Transmission Advantages
Low fuel consumption – In case of an old automatic gearbox, fuel consumption has always been significantly higher compared to that of the manual transmission.
The purchase price of the car – All cars in Europe are sold with manual transmission, which means that you don’t have to pay extra for this equipment.
Low maintenance costs – Any mechanic can tell you that repairing a manual gearbox is much easier than fixing an automatic one.
Better control of the car – Automatic transmissions are designed to choose the best gear for any situation, but they don’t always succeed. Moreover, an automatic transmission doesn’t allow for drivers to either anticipate an oncoming condition, or to purposely select a lower gear for an added boost of power.
Disadvantages of Manual Transmission
Not so comfortable – When using manual transmission, you always need one hand and work.
Clutch wear – Regular and improper use may lead to clutch wear.
Advantages of Automatic Transmission
Comfort – Automatic gearbox not only lets you keep both hands on the steering wheel for better control, but makes the experience of the driver behind the wheel more comfortable, pleasant and refined.
Easier for beginners – An automatic gearbox is easy to use even for unexperienced drivers. You only need to pass the lever in position D and hit the road.
Better for hills – Cars equipped with automatic transmission allow you to drive up the hill without the engine stop, as in the manual transmission.
No stalling – Related to the previous point, you will not face the embarrassing experience of being honked off when leaving from a red light.
Low fuel consumption – Today, automatic gearbox became so powerful that they have a very similar consumption level to the manual gearbox.
Disadvantages of Automatic Transmission
Higher maintenance costs – An automatic transmission mechanism is more complex and therefore repair costs will always be higher.
Lower performance – If we talk about conventional automatic gearbox and not the double clutch one, we can say that it affects the performance of a car. And you could observe that when pressing the gas pedal (kick-down) and see that nothing happens for a moment. This is because the transition from a lower gear to a higher one happens with a slight delay.
As a conclusion, manual transmission is less expensive than an automatic one, but can we say it’s better? Both have advantages and disadvantages and we cannot precisely say if one is better than another, but we can state that it depends on what fits you better as a driver since you are going to use it as part of your everyday life.
